BERKS COUPLE KILLED IN CAR ACCIDENT
Author: The Morning Call

Article Text:

A Berks County couple were killed when a horse trailer became detached from a truck and crashed into their car in Ontelaunee Township in Berks County on Monday afternoon, police said.

Daniel Mertz of New York was traveling north on Route 61 when he lost control of his pickup truck and went into the southbound lane, officer Michael Cardona of the Maiden Creek-Ontelaunee police department said.

An empty horse trailer Mertz had used to haul hay to Pottstown somehow broke loose from his truck and slammed into a southbound car being driven by Ruth Holland, shearing off the top of her vehicle, he said.

A third vehicle being driven by Anthony White of Reading then collided with Mertz sending him careening back into the northbound lane where he struck a car being driven by John Hessler of Reading, Cardona said.

Ruth Holland, 65, and her husband George Holland, 67, of 420 Pine St., Shoemakersville, were pronounced dead at the scene by the Berks County Coroner's Office.

Both died of multiple injuries and their deaths were ruled accidental, said Deputy Coroner Charles Schweitzer.

No one else involved in the four-car accident was injured, Cardona said.

Cardona said that police and an accident reconstructionist are investigating the accident including how the trailer became detached from Mertz's truck.
