Article Text:Two Missouri men were injured yesterday when a car in which they were riding was struck by a utility trailer that broke loose from a pickup truck that was towing it on Interstate 81 in Hampton Twp.

The driver of the car, Derek Landolt, 20, of Wellsville, Mo., was taken to Chambersburg Hospital where he was undergoing treatment last night, a hospital spokeswoman said. A passenger in the Landolt car, Jerry Withinton Jr., 20, of St. Louis was released after treatment at the hospital. Police said Landolt and Withinton both are serving with the Navy.

State police at Chambersburg said the 6: 45 p.m. accident occurred in the southbound lanes of I-81 just north of Exit 10. Police said the pickup truck towing the trailer was driven by Steven Eby of Morgantown, W.Va.

They said both vehicles went off the roadway and flipped over. Landolt and Withinton were thrown from the car. Eby was not injured, police said.

Article Text: Trailer breaks loose, causing accident Two people were injured Thursday afternoon when a trailer hitch broke, causing a trailer to break loose from a truck and fishtail into the wrong lane of state Route 97.

It and an oncoming pickup truck then collided, state police said. The accident happened at 1:16 p.m. in Union Township, west of Union City. Troopers said Randall Meabon, 46, of Wattsburg, was driving a 1998 Dodge truck east on Route 97, pulling a 1999 Eby trailer. .

Police said the trailer hitch broke and the trailer fishtailed across the center line of the highway into the path of a westbound 1999 Dodge truck driven by Michele Avenali, 27, of Kane. Avenali was being treated in the Hamot Medical Center emergency room Thursday night.

Her passenger, identified by state police as Daniel Avenali, 30, of Kane, was released after treatment, a Hamot nursing supervisor said. Police said Meabon was not injured. All three motorists wore seat belts, police said. Eby Inc. makes livestock trailers.

Empty horse trailer breaks loose in road
Article Text:An empty horse trailer broke loose from a pickup truck at 5:30 a.m. Wednesday along Route 322 east of Churchtown Road in Salisbury Township, according to the Ephrata State Police. Ronald Meloney, 60, East Earl R2, was traveling west on Route 322 when his pickup hit a bump in the road, and the horse trailer came loose and crossed into the east bound lane. Kenneth Forrester, 49, of 37 Hilldale Drive, Ephrata, was traveling east on Route 322 and swerved to avoid the trailer, but the tow bar hit the passenger side of his car. His car was severly damaged, but neither he nor Meloney were injured.
